I have wondered how the U.S. could decide to renege after signing the JCPOA. When I last checked, I read that it was not formally a treaty, but rather was "a political declaration, not a legally binding agreement" (to quote an article on the Council on Foreign Relations website). It sounds weasel-ly to me, as though the U.S never meant to commit to it.
